A few weeks ago I decided to test out my green thumb and planted some herbs and flowers on my balcony. I have always wanted to have a garden but have never lived somewhere where that was possible. So planter boxes it was! I planted basil, parsley, thyme, and cilantro.

I have to say I am pretty impressed with how well they are all doing (so far). The cilantro is the only one not really working out. When I went to the garden store I asked for some advice on each herb, I was told to not let the cilantro to go to seed. I nodded my head like I knew what she was talking about. Well when I noticed my cilantro wasn’t doing well I did some more research and discovered you don’t want the plant to flower and need to trim it to keep the cilantro leaves growing.

Pasta Salad

Salads, Sides By July 3, 2016 Tags: , , No Comments

Happy birthday America! I’m back from a little hiatus due to being busy between family in town and work. Things have been so busy around here that I have forgotten what it’s like to be bored (which is a good thing I guess!). But things are finally quieter this weekend giving me time to make some food for one of my favorite food holidays of the year!

Summertime foods have always been very nostalgic for me. I have so many memories of eating potato salad, hamburgers, pies, corn on the cob, and pasta salad during the hot summer months.  Of course all these foods were either at picnics or family gatherings making them taste even better.

Mint Moscow Mules

Drinks By June 12, 2016 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

image

Before I moved to Colorado I had no idea what a Moscow Mule was. I can’t remember ever seeing them on a menu anywhere else. It’s possible I was just missing them but they were definitely not on every cocktail menu as they are here.

It wasn’t until I asked what everyone was drinking out of a copper mug that I learned what a Moscow Mule was.  I have to admit seeing a drink served out of a beautiful copper mug made me want to try the drink regardless of what was in it.

Sprinkled Suga’ Cookies

Cookies, Dessert By June 5, 2016 Tags: , , , No Comments

Have I ever mentioned that I am known for spilling things? It’s not something I exactly want people to know about me but it’s something that I just can’t seem to escape from. Case and point, I have discovered one of the worst things to possibly spill: flour.

image

When I woke up in the morning to make these cookies I saw I had a voicemail from an unknown number. It turns out I had purchased a brand of flour that is currently being recalled for E. coli contamination and was being notified to discard or return my flour. Working for the health department I know wayyy too much about the dangers of E. coli and I don’t want anything to do with it (nor do I want to become a case that my coworkers have to investigate). Anyways this brings me to my flour spillage…

Seared Halibut Fillets

Dinner, Fish By May 29, 2016 Tags: , , , No Comments

It’s Memorial Day weekend which means grilling burgers and hot dogs, and going to the beach. Well that’s what everyone else might be doing this weekend but that’s not the case for me… While I wish I were able to go to the beach that’s just not possible here in Colorado. So instead I am enjoying the good weather with some bike riding and cooking up some delicious halibut instead of hamburgers.

Let me say although I love a good hamburger, this halibut recipe makes up for the fact that I have no beach to go to. It’s been awhile since I have had halibut so when I saw it on sale in the store I knew I had to get it.
